Bonnie Is Home

The latest

Bonnie was missing from 4PM Wednesday March 19th through 12:30AM Tuesday March 25th. Five days and 8 hours.

During that time more than four inches of rain fell and temperatures dropped to 40F. Winds blew to 85mph. Gusts in our neighborhood were above 60 the evening of March 19th.

NOTE:

Updates are listed near the top of this post for the next few days as a courtesy to members of our community who want to follow along and have cared so much for Bonnie’s recovery. Thank you so much!

0900 Friday March 28th.

Drainage from Bonnie’s bullet wound has nearly ceased. She’s increasingly active – pulling on the leash, wanting to go further… And she moved from her spot on the couch to the bed in the study – which is her special security place (Like for when there is thunder to hide from.) My desk is only feet away.

Her interest in our resident feline crew (eight of ’em) has returned, though she’s not resumed refereeing squabbles just yet. She’s giving attention to everything, a bit more hyper-vigilant than prior to her big adventure… We’re hoping that as the affects of trauma recede, she’ll return to her usual, self-appointed role as pack sentry.

What is it about the mail man anyway? Or doorbell. Not scary, Bonnie! Sheesh.

0800 Thursday March 27th.

Happy Garbage Day in Bandon. (Insider joke, it always seems to be windy on garbage day here – which, well, you know.)

Bonnie is steadily returning to her former self. She’s getting on and off “her” couch unassisted, even as Kristin and I grit our teeth. We’re talking about ending our shifts of ‘sleeping’ with her — I’ve taken the job from Kristin at 0200 the past couple of nights. Tolerating meds well. Pulls on the leash harder and harder when walking in the yard. Her sleep remains very troubled. Shes deeply traumatized.

We are amazed.

Why’d Bonnie take off in the first place? (click for best guess…)

Bonnie has always been extremely agitated by thunder. We had dialogue with a neighbor to our north that confirms lightening in their area around 4PM the afternoon of March 19th. We didn’t hear it, but it seems likely Bonnie did and it shredded her psyche. She has never run away (just up Ohio a little way) and always comes when called. The Thunder explains her divergent behavior.

15:30 Wednesday March 26th

Bonnie’s wound continues to heal. She’s drinking tons of water and consequently needs to be outside to do her business every 2-3 hours. No blood in or — miracle that her tubes weren’t shredded. Meds haven’t hampered her instinct to check pee mail.

14:30 Tuesday March 25th.

Bonnie is out of surgery and recovering. We will be out the door soon to pick her up!

07:30 Wednesday March 26th.

Bonnie has been taking care of her “business” with as much normalcy as she can muster. Her interest in ‘pee-mail’ is undiminished. Overnight, she slept off the anesthesia and this morning we have begun the course of medications prescribed.

  1. I am only a neighbor to Bonnie but we have actually lost sleep over her being missing. She’s such a regular around here with her cute lil hop walk. And the clapping, there’s been no clapping!! Having just lost our own girl sprocket our hearts were broken for Bonnie, but now recovered. I’m sorry in all the searching we never saw her elusive self. Happy she’s found her way home. Thank you for the updates and this amazing story of finding her. I’ll stop crying now.

    1. Oh we didn’t know Sprocket had passed. We’re so sorry for your loss!

And… Thank you so much for your care! We’re zonked. It’s time for a nap! (at least that’s how we feel.)

  2. Wow. Such a harrowing story. I’m so glad there is a happy ending. I hope Bonnie’s recovery (and yours and Krisin’s) is quick and complete! I’m sorry all of you had to endure this tragedy! Who in the hell would shoot a compromised dog?

    1. Hey John. So blessed you stopped past … I was just texting with another dog nut (specifically another GSP owner) about the homeless living in the area of the incident. Fielding questions like “are we going after the person…” Well, the police are clear – Dog at large triggers property protection (chickens?) and trespass rules that underpin firearm discharge ordinances. There’s a local story (Bandon Police Dept posted on FB yesterday?) about a homeless woman with many dogs in the same location – maybe Bonnie got tangled up with her pets? Anyway pity anyone who’d shoot at a stray dog in a storm – Even a warning shot. Come hang out down here someday. Beats the snow and dirt of spring months in good ‘ol MT! You can help me mow the lawn! 😉 BTW I just added an update to the post and a link to a photo of the wound repair.

  3. I am so glad she has made it home safely. May recovery be quick!
