From the Forums on QRZ.COM…
PROPOSED: Only 2 Amateur Radio License Classes — A Response to the FCC and an Invitation to Discuss
Maybe this notion would be helpful… Tests and grow the hobby into online schooling.
Should we perhaps, keep up with the world a bit?
In the age of Google and AI – the more important skills may be one’s panache for ‘looking things up.’
Two tests, okay…
Maybe exams could be re-balanced with some form of “open book” skills demonstration – leading to badges, like in Scouts (meh?) The skills training could be supervised by new kinds of VE’s / VEC’s
A certain amount of head knowledge on rules and bands is essential. Test on ’em. Licenses follow.
Conversely, at least some technical stuff could become online accessible. Maybe ‘merit’ certifications. Like Modes, Geomagnetics, Electronics, Antennas, Amplifiers, Filters …Have teachers who are deep in the material share knowledge?
Can the system can be tuned to encourage / support continuous learning?
One thing for sure – as a retired teqweenie? I’d like to see the hobby get past Windows XP. Websites and Software. Jeeze, fellows.
I mean how many folks actually fill out and keep records of station emission compliance checks. That could be a badge.
